Booking choice: The guided summer day hike, from $183 per person. Check dates Tour details
Every Trolltunga hike starts on one road. Skjeggedalsvegen climbs about 7 km from Tyssedal (P1) to the main trailhead at Skjeggedal (P2), and from there a smaller road continues to Mågelitopp (P3). Close that first stretch and the whole mountain is off limits, guided tours included.
That is what happened in spring 2026. This post covers the closure, the road hours that still apply after it, and the sources to watch before you book a trip for June 2027.
The quick answer
The road from P1 Tyssedal to P2 Skjeggedal was closed to all traffic, walkers included, until 8 June 2026 after several rockslides. It reopened on 8 June, the same day the P3 car park and the P2 to P3 shuttle started. The road is now open 06:00 to 21:00 with traffic control and shut overnight while protection work continues. No one has announced anything for 2027 yet, so check trolltunga.com before you commit to an early June date.
Why was the road to Trolltunga closed in 2026?
Rockslides. Several slid onto Skjeggedalsvegen, and the municipality closed the road to all traffic until 8 June 2026 because of an acute risk of more.
The notice from Visit Hardanger was blunt. The road between P1 Tyssedal and P2 Skjeggedal was closed completely, for cars, bikes and people on foot, because of "an acute risk of rockslides and necessary safety work in the area". Walking around the barriers was not allowed either. With the road shut, Skjeggedal, Mågelitopp and the trailhead could not be reached at all.
Visit Norway carried the same message on its Trolltunga page: closed until 8 June because of the risk of rockfalls and landslides. This was not a weather delay or a late snowmelt. It was a hillside that needed securing before anyone could drive under it again.

Could you still hike to Trolltunga during the closure?
No. The trail starts above the closed section, so there was no legal way to the trailhead on foot, by car or with a guide.
The closure covered the whole stretch from P1 to P2, so even the 38 km walk from Tyssedal was off. A guided tour did not help: both the summer guided hike and the via ferrata meet at Skjeggedal. If you had a P2 day booked in the first week of June, it was gone.
Visit Hardanger pointed visitors to other walks in Ullensvang instead: Dronningstien, the Husedalen waterfalls, Bondhusvatnet, the Buerbreen glacier arm, and a guided Blue Ice Hike on Folgefonna. Buerbreen is a 6 km return walk from Buer near Odda, graded medium, with a steep finish. Keep that list. If the road shuts again, those are your backup days.

Is the Trolltunga road open now, and what are the hours?
Yes. Skjeggedalsvegen is open daily from 06:00 to 21:00 with traffic control on site, and fully closed from 21:00 to 06:00 while rockslide protection work continues.
The trolltunga.com homepage says the road has reopened and the buses run as normal, with a caveat: some work remains, the road shuts overnight, and walkers should not go through the construction area. Those night hours matter more than they sound. A car parked at P2 after 21:00 is not going anywhere until 06:00.
Work backwards from that. The last Road Bus down from P3 leaves at 19:00 in summer (shuttle timetable), and Visit Norway tells hikers to start before 8 am. A late start from P2 plus a slow descent can leave you on the wrong side of the barrier. Start early, and use the shuttle on the way back if your legs are done.
Guided day hike from P2 with the P3 shuttle both ways, so the road timing is someone else's job.
Check dates for the guided summer day hikeWhat did the closure change for P3 and the shuttle in 2026?
Everything above P2 started on 8 June: the P3 Mågelitopp car park and the P2 to P3 Road Bus both opened that day.
The 2026 parking page gives the P3 season as 8 June to 30 September 2026, pre-booking only until 31 August. The Road Bus ran from 8 June to 27 September 2026. Neither could open before the road below them did.
The Odda shuttle had timetables from 15 May, with most routes from 22 May. Those buses end at P2, so until 8 June there was nowhere for them to take hikers. Our full 2026 fare list is in the parking and shuttle prices post.
Will the Trolltunga road be closed in 2027?
Nobody has said. As of 28 October 2026, trolltunga.com lists the 2027 Odda shuttle from 22 May to 26 September and the P3 dates as "to be announced".
The 2027 panel on trolltunga.com gives P1 and P2 parking as open all year, the Odda shuttle from 22 May to 26 September, and the P2 to P3 shuttle and P3 car park as "Date to be announced". That is normal for October. It also means there is no promise about early June.
The slope above Skjeggedalsvegen has been unstable enough to need overnight closures into the autumn. We would not assume a quiet spring. These are the places to check, in this order:
| Where to check | What it tells you | When to look |
|---|---|---|
| trolltunga.com homepage | Road hours, closures, shuttle and P3 dates | When you book, and the week before |
| Visit Hardanger notices | Formal closure notices and backup hikes | April and May |
| Ullensvang municipality | News on safety work on Skjeggedalsvegen | Spring and late autumn |
| Visit Norway Trolltunga page | Closure banner and season rules | Before you book flights |
| Tourist office, +47 480 70 777 | A human answer on current road status | If the pages disagree |
How should you plan a June 2027 trip around the road?
Give yourself a spare day, book things you can cancel, and do not build the whole trip around 1 June.
The self-guided season on trolltunga.com runs from 1 June to 30 September. In 2026 the first week of that window simply did not happen. Put Trolltunga in the middle of your stay in Odda, not on the first or last day, and keep one flexible day for weather or a late opening.
Free cancellation helps. The summer guided hike and the via ferrata both cancel for a full refund up to 24 hours before. For the other tours, check the listing's cancellation terms before you pay. Book a refundable room in Odda or Tyssedal too. And if the road does shut, our getting-there guide covers the bus and boat links you will still need for the backup hikes.

A guide, the P3 shuttle both ways and free cancellation up to 24 hours before. The safe way to book an early-season date.
