Trolltunga Active · Odda
A fast open boat takes up to 12 people about 50 km out and back on the fjord from Odda, with stops for the skipper's stories about glaciers, farms and industry. It isn't a Trolltunga trip at all: book it for the day before or after the hike, when your legs want a rest.

Trolltunga Active also runs a RIB, a rigid inflatable boat, from its store in central Odda at Eitrheimsvegen 4, or from the pier at Hotel Ullensvang in Lofthus, depending on what you book. Departures are at 11:00 and 14:00. You're on the water for about 1.5 hours and the whole thing takes about two, counting boarding and landing.
The route is a round trip of about 50 km (30 nautical miles) on the Sørfjorden, the arm of the Hardangerfjord that ends at Odda. The skipper stops along the way to talk about the glacier, the fruit-farming tradition and the area's industrial history. With luck you'll see porpoises, or golden eagles nesting on the cliffs. A flotation suit, a self-inflating life jacket and goggles are provided.
A few cautions. You sit still in the wind, so it feels colder than it is, even in a suit: bring a hat, a buff and gloves. Getting in and out may mean a wooden ladder at low tide, which is slippery when wet. The largest suit is XXL. The boat runs in all weather, with the skipper adjusting speed to the waves. At 4.3 from 24 reviews it rates below the hiking trips here. Check the listing's cancellation terms before you book.
