Sunset at Trolltunga and a night in a dome

You meet at 10:30, leave your pack at a dome camp about 3 km before the rock, and reach Trolltunga in the evening as most hikers are walking down. Pick it if you want a sunset visit and a dinner cooked by the guides without pitching anything yourself, and if a shared dome sounds fun rather than awkward.

Trolltunga Sunset Glamping in a Dome

About this experience

Trolltunga Active runs this one, and the listing says so. You meet at 10:30 at the base in Skjeggedal, take the shuttle to P3 if conditions allow, and hike past lakes and viewpoints with a guide. About 3 km before the rock you reach the dome camp, drop your bags and have a drink and a snack.

Then you walk on to Trolltunga, usually with few people around, since most hikers are on their way down. The guide takes your photos, including the needle view when abseiling is possible. Back at camp there's dinner, and you sleep in one of three Arctic Domes, each with six sleeping places, in a warm sleeping bag and liner. Next morning you can go back to the rock while the guide makes breakfast, or sleep in. Expect to be back at P2 between 14:00 and 15:00.

Read the operator's page before you pack. The domes are basic: a drop toilet outside, no showers, no electricity, and the operator says they don't hold heat well. You share with up to five others unless you add a private tent at booking, though meals stay in the dome. You bring food for two lunches, 2 litres of water, a headlamp and a pack of at least 40 litres. The operator's minimum age is 13, though some resellers print 15, so check the listing.

About 3 km before the rock, on the plateau. You leave your bag there in the afternoon, walk on to Trolltunga in the evening and come back for dinner.

How many people share a dome?

Each Arctic Dome has six sleeping places. A separate private tent can be added at booking, but dinner and breakfast are still served in the dome.

Are there toilets or showers?

A drop toilet outside the domes. There are no showers and no electricity, so charge your phone before you leave and bring a power bank.

Dome or tent: which overnight trip is better?
