A night at Trolltunga

Day hikers leave the rock in the afternoon. Stay the night and you get it at sunset and again at sunrise, with a fraction of the queue.

Wild camping is allowed on the Trolltunga plateau, with a few rules. You can carry your own tent, or book a guided overnight where the tent or dome, sleeping bag and meals are carried up or already in place.

This guide covers where you can pitch, when the sun sets and rises, how the tent and dome tours differ, and what to pack if you go on your own.

The quick answer

You may camp on the sites marked with a tent symbol on the official map, downhill from the trail and away from water, but not at the car parks. Open fires are banned from 15 April to 15 September. In midsummer the sun sets after 22:30 and rises around 04:15. A guided tent overnight costs from $516; a night in an Arctic Dome from $485.

Can you camp at Trolltunga?

Yes, on the sites marked with a tent symbol on the official map. Pitch downhill from the trail, away from streams and lakes, and on bare rock if you can.

The official camping page sets out the rules:

  • Where: the marked tent sites. Not in rest areas, near private cabins, in vulnerable areas, or anywhere signed no camping.
  • Not at the car parks: camping and overnight sleeping are banned at P1, P2 and P3, and near the trailhead.
  • Fires: no open fires from 15 April to 15 September. Bring a stove or food that needs no cooking.
  • Distance from houses: under Norway's general rules, not within 150 m of an occupied house or cabin.
  • Gear: a thick sleeping mat is required. Cheap tents get torn apart by mountain wind.

No official page addresses sleeping on the tongue itself. The marked sites are where you should be, and nobody wants to roll over at 700 m.

What time are sunset and sunrise at Trolltunga?

In late June the sun sets around 23:00 and rises around 04:10. By mid-September it sets just before 20:00 and rises at 07:00.

We calculated these for the coordinates of Trolltunga (local time, flat horizon). Surrounding peaks can hide the sun a little earlier or later.

Around midsummer it never gets fully dark up here, which is good for walking and bad for sleep. Bring an eye mask.

Reach the rock around 17:00, camp nearby and return at sunrise. Tent, sleeping bag and meals included.

Tent, dome or cabin: what overnight trips are there?

A guided tent trip with Trolltunga Adventures, Arctic Dome nights with Trolltunga Active (summer, via ferrata and winter versions), and Trolltunga Active's Gateway Cabin 5 km up the trail.

The Gateway Cabin sits 5 km up the trail, about 9 km from Trolltunga. It splits the hike rather than putting you near the rock.

What is the guided tent overnight like?

You ride to P3 at midday, hike in the afternoon, reach the rock around 17:00 as the day crowds leave, and sleep in a tent nearby. Next morning you go back for sunrise.

On the overnight camping hike, Trolltunga Adventures carries the camp: a private tent, warm sleeping bag, mat and liner. Meals are lunch around 15:00, reindeer stew (or a vegan dish) for dinner, and breakfast with hot drinks. Transport from P2 to P3 and back is reserved for you. Parking at P2 is extra: NOK 770 for two days in 2026.

The season runs from about 25 May to 15 September, per the operator. Ages 15 and up. Back at the car park around 14:00 to 15:00 on day two. One guest, Emily, summed it up: "This was an amazing experience - one of the best we had during our time in Norway."

What is a night in an Arctic Dome like?

Warmer and roomier than a tent, with a see-through ceiling. Trolltunga Active's dome camp sits about 3 km before the rock, and dinner and breakfast are cooked by the guides.

On the sunset dome night you meet at 10:30 at the Trolltunga Active base in Skjeggedal, ride to P3, drop your bag at the dome camp, and walk on to the rock for sunset. The camp has three domes that sleep up to six each, with sleeping bags and liners provided. An afternoon snack, dinner and breakfast are included; bring your own two lunches and 2 litres of water. A sunrise revisit is optional.

Facilities are basic: the winter dome camp has a drop toilet and no showers or electricity. Choose the dome if comfort matters, the tent if you want to sleep closer to the rock.

What do you need to carry if you camp on your own?

A mountain tent, a warm sleeping bag, a thick mat, a stove, food, a headlamp and a way to treat water. Expect a much heavier pack than on a day hike.

  • Tent: a sturdy mountain tent. Trolltunga AS warns that strong winds easily tear apart cheap ones.
  • Sleep: a warm sleeping bag and a thick mat, which the official camping page requires.
  • Cooking: a small stove, because open fires are banned all summer.
  • Water: fill up at P2. Many hikers refill from streams, but not before the first shelter near Floren, and never near Trolltunga or the cabins (not safe to drink).
  • Waste: there are no toilets on the mountain. Carry out everything, used toilet paper included.

Logistics: the afternoon Road Bus goes up from 14:45 to 18:45 (drop-in), handy for a late start. P2 parking costs NOK 770 for two days. Trolltunga Active rents gear in Skjeggedal, and Odda has sports shops.

Rather not carry a tent 10 km? The overnight tour brings the tent, sleeping bag and meals.

When can you do an overnight trip?

Summer trips run from late May or early June to mid-September; self-guided camping fits the 1 June to 30 September season. In winter, guided dome nights are the only sensible option.

Snow often lies on the path until May or June, and it can settle again from mid-October. The ranger cabin is staffed from about 17 May to mid-October, which is the safest window for a night up there. The 2026 road closure pushed the start of everything to 8 June; check before you plan an early June night.

From October to May, the winter sunset overnight snowshoes up, catches the sunset at the rock, and sleeps in a dome camp, usually with nobody else there. It is for ages 15 and up, and the cancellation window is 4 days.

Is sunrise or sunset better at Trolltunga?

Sunset is easier and usually the better photo. Sunrise is quieter still, and often comes with mist lying in the valley below.

The official queue page says early morning and late afternoon usually have little or no queue, so both work. Sunset is the easy one: the overnight tours time their arrival for it, and you don't have to get up at 04:00. Sunrise is for people who sleep near the rock and like having it nearly to themselves.

Our pick: plan for sunset, set an alarm for sunrise, and decide when it rings. The weather makes the choice more often than you do. If fog rolls in, stay off the edge. A fall in fog on unfenced cliffs is the one mistake you can't take back; see Trolltunga safety.

Frequently asked questions

Can you sleep on the Trolltunga rock?

No official page addresses it directly, but the official advice is to camp on the marked tent sites. Sleeping on an unfenced ledge 700 m up is a bad idea.

Can you sleep in the emergency shelters?

No. Visit Norway says the shelters are for emergencies only and not meant for overnight stays.

Can you have a campfire at Trolltunga?

Not from 15 April to 15 September, when open fires are banned. Bring a stove.

How much does a guided overnight at Trolltunga cost?

From $485 for the sunset dome night, $516 for the tent overnight with meals, and $542 for the winter dome overnight, per person in 2026.
