How to get to Trolltunga

Getting to Trolltunga is two trips: first to Odda on the Sørfjorden, then up the mountain road above Tyssedal to the car parks where the hike starts.

Trolltunga is in Ullensvang municipality, above the village of Tyssedal, about 6 km north of Odda. No train goes there. You arrive by car, by bus, or by boat and bus, and then take a shuttle or drive up the private Skjeggedal road to the trailhead.

Times and prices below are the 2026 figures from trolltunga.com and its shuttle page. The summer shuttle dates for 2027 had not been announced when we checked.

The quick answer

Drive or take a bus to Odda (about 3 hours from Bergen, 4 from Stavanger, 6 from Oslo, 2.5 from Haugesund). From Odda, the summer shuttle reaches P2 Skjeggedal in about 30 minutes for NOK 200 one way. From P2, the Road Bus climbs to P3 Mågelitopp for NOK 150. Driving to P2 costs NOK 550 a day for parking, toll included. The Skjeggedal road is open 06:00 to 21:00.

Where does the Trolltunga hike start?

At one of three car parks above Tyssedal: P1 Tyssedal, P2 Skjeggedal or P3 Mågelitopp. Most hikers start at P2 and ride the Road Bus to P3.

The Skjeggedal road leaves Rv13 at Tyssedal and climbs to P2, the main trailhead. Above that, a narrow 4.3 km road with few passing places goes on to P3. Only the Road Bus and cars with a P3 permit may drive it.

How do you get from Bergen to Odda?

By car in about 3 hours, or by Skyss bus 930 in about 3 hours via Norheimsund and the Jondal ferry. A boat to Rosendal plus bus 760 is the scenic option.

  • Car: about 3 hours. The route through Voss and over the Hardanger Bridge avoids ferries; the Norheimsund route uses the Tørvikbygd to Jondal ferry. Download the Hardanger ferry timetables before you go, as Trolltunga AS suggests.
  • Bus: Skyss route 930 runs between Bergen busstasjon and Odda terminal via Norheimsund and Jondal ferry quay. One sample trip took 2 hours 55 minutes; check times on entur.no.
  • Train and bus: the Bergen Line runs Bergen to Voss, with bus connections to Odda.
  • Boat: the Hardangerfjord-Ekspressen leaves Strandkaiterminalen in central Bergen for Rosendal, calling at Flesland, Os and Malkenes. Bus 760 connects Rosendal to Odda. Slower, much prettier.

A day trip from Bergen does not work for most people: six hours on the road plus a 10-hour hike. Sleep in Odda or Tyssedal.

How do you get to Odda from Oslo or Stavanger?

Oslo is about 6 hours by car over Haukelifjell, or by the NOR-WAY Haukeliekspressen bus. Stavanger is about 4 hours. The nearest airport by drive time is Haugesund, 2.5 hours away.

From Oslo, drive the E134 west over the Haukelifjell mountain pass to Røldal, then turn north on Rv13 through the Odda valley, past the Låtefossen waterfall. NOR-WAY's Haukeliekspressen (NW180) serves Odda from Oslo, Bergen, Haugesund and Telemark; from Oslo and Haugesund the trip includes a bus change.

From Stavanger, allow about 4 hours. From Haugesund, 2.5 hours. Trolltunga AS advises against driving in winter (October to April) if you are not used to snow and ice; take public transport or hire a driver instead. There are no EV chargers at the Trolltunga car parks, so charge in Odda first.

How does the Road Bus from P2 to P3 work?

It runs from 8 June to 27 September 2026, weather permitting. Up costs NOK 150, down NOK 100 (children 4 to 12: NOK 50). It saves 1 to 1.5 hours each way.

From 8 June to 31 August, buses go up continuously from 06:30 to 11:00 (pre-book or drop-in) and again from 14:45 to 18:45 (drop-in). They come down from 06:45 to 11:15 and from 14:30 to 19:00. In September the first bus up is at 07:00. The road closes to the bus in snow or ice.

Tickets are sold at the P2 ticket office, with a limited number bookable online for the trip up. Tickets down are drop-in only and can't be bought from P3, so buy the down ticket at P2 before you go. The shuttle page has this year's details.

Where can you park for Trolltunga, and what does it cost?

P2 Skjeggedal costs NOK 550 for a day, toll included. P1 Tyssedal is NOK 330. P3 Mågelitopp is NOK 600 plus the NOK 220 toll, pre-booked. Dropping someone off at P2 costs NOK 220.

Multi-day prices in 2026: P1 is NOK 550 for two days and NOK 770 for three. P2 is NOK 770 for two days and NOK 990 for three; motorcycles pay half. The drop-off toll is paid at the machine at P2 and applies to rental cars and AutoPASS tags too. Some older pages still say NOK 200; the 2026 parking page says NOK 220.

  • Vehicle limits: buses, minivans and camper vans may not use the P2 road (max 5.2 m). At P3, max height is 2 m and motorcycles are not allowed.
  • No sleeping: camping and overnight sleeping are not allowed at any car park.
  • P3 permits: from 8 June to 31 August, P3 is pre-booking only, with entry from P2 between 06:30 and 11:00. In September, drop-in is allowed too.

Every 2026 fare in one table: parking and shuttle prices.

When is the Skjeggedal road open?

Daily from 06:00 to 21:00, with traffic control. It is closed from 21:00 to 06:00. In 2026 it was also closed to all traffic until 8 June because of rockslide risk.

The road from P1 to P2 is a private toll road, not a public highway, so its hours are set by Trolltunga AS. Come down before 21:00 or your car stays at P2 overnight, which you'll pay for.

The spring of 2026 showed it can't be taken for granted. After several rockslides, the road was closed until 8 June 2026, walking past the barriers was forbidden, and the P3 season started the same day. Check road status on the trolltunga.com homepage before you book a June trip, and read what happened in 2026.

Road opens at 06:00. The first shuttle from Odda arrives at 06:15.

Should you stay in Odda or Tyssedal?

Tyssedal if you are driving and want the shortest morning. Odda if you rely on the shuttle, want restaurants, or plan a rest day on the fjord.

Tyssedal sits right below the Skjeggedal road. Places to stay include Tyssedal Hotel, Trolltunga Hostel, Trolltunga Aparthotel and Trolltunga Guesthouse. Odda has Trolltunga Hotel (a 1928 villa in town, not at the trailhead), Hardanger Hotel near the shuttle stop, and Trolltunga Camping by Sandvinsvatnet lake, 2 km from the centre, where the 05:45 shuttle starts.

If you book the guided summer hike, there is an optional info meeting at 21:00 the night before at Trolltunga Hotel. Give yourself a day after the hike too. Your legs will thank you, and the fjord is right there.
